Thelma Byrd Qualls
was born in White Sulphur, Tennessee on February 12, 1906 the daughter of the late Felix Grundy and Etna Carroll Byrd.
On June 15, 1924 she was united in marriage to Hobart Qualls, who preceded her in death April 1974.
Mrs. Qualls retired from Brown Shoe Company. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Savannah since 1930, when she transferred her membership from Pickwick Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Home Demonstration Club. In addition to White Sulphur, which is now called Pickwick, Mrs. Qualls had also lived in Duncans Landing, which is now called Bruton Branch, and moved to Savannah in 1928.
She was a kind gentle lady who answered to many names: her siblings and their wives called her "Dutch"; her first grandchild, Jack, called her "Nanny"; however, her son Keith's children called her "Granny"; her great-grandchildren called her "Gran-Nan"; she was loved by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends that called her "Aunt Dutchie".
Mrs. Qualls departed this life on September 6, 2009 at the age 103 years, 6 months, 25 days.
Mrs. Qualls is survived by a daughter, Laura Qualls May of Savannah, Tennessee; 5 grandchildren, Jack May, Jeff Qualls, Rebecca Qualls Sullivan, Zoe Qualls, and Ann Qualls Avila; 6 great-grandchildren.
