Annie Laura Worrell passed quietly away on December 10, 2010, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee following a brief illness. She was a kind, caring, and vigorous person who will be greatly missed by her family, friends and two sons.
Ann was born to Pitser Miller and Carrie Lee Bishop in Fayette County, Tennessee, on July 14, 1922. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe. D. Worrell, parents and siblings, and is survived by many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren: David Emory Worrell, Amber Vermeesch, and Rachel Worrell, and one great grandchild, Samuel Ransom Worrell.
From 1935 to 1939, she attended Somerville High School in Somerville, Tennessee where she met her future husband, Joe. They were married June 1, 1939 and moved to Maryville. From there, they moved to Jack’s Creek, and to Memphis, during which time two children were born, John and David Worrell. Her husband’s work moved the family to Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she spent the next twenty-four years.
During this period, she pursued and obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education and finally, a Doctorate of Education. She was extremely proud of these accomplishments, and taught school in Lake Charles for these years.
After a brief retirement to Natchitoches, Louisiana, they permanently retired to Bolivar, Tennessee, where they spent the next sixteen years in the heart of her extended family. These were pleasant times and she used this time to establish membership in the DAR, Daughters of the Confederacy, Descendents of the Pilgrims, the Plantagenet Society and Barons of the Magna Carta.
A service to celebrate Ann’s life is pending, as is the memorial. Ann will be interred in the Holly Grove Cemetery near Bells, Tennessee with her husband. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Blakeford at Green Hills, the staff and doctors of Vanderbilt and especially Dr. John Worrell, who stayed at her side until she, at last, slipped away.
