B. Vivian (BV) Cathey, Jr.

Mr. B. Vivian (BV) Cathey, Jr., a beloved member of the community in Selmer, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2024, at the age of 88 Years, 2 Months, and 6 Days.

Born on December 21, 1935, in Jackson, TN to the late B. Vivian and Bessie Mae Chandler Cathey, Mr. Cathey led a fulfilling life dedicated to service and family.

In December of 1961, he was joined in marriage to Eunice E. Webb; a union that brought much joy and love into his life until her passing on August 2, 1978.

A proud veteran who served his country honorably, Mr. Cathey began his military journey with the Navy Reserve before finding his true calling in the United States Army. Stationed for 3 years in Taiwan with the Army Security Agency, he distinguished himself through his dedication and commitment to his service.

His passion for learning led him to pursue higher education at Lambuth and Union University where he earned his bachelor's degree. Throughout his professional life, Mr. Cathey worked diligently in various industries including Schweiger Industries (a maker of fine furniture) where he earned his industrial engineering certificate and Brown Shoe Company for many years. It was during his time at Brown Shoe Company that he met his beloved wife Eunice while working in Salem, IL. He was assigned to Brown Shoe Company, Factory V in Selmer, TN and moved to McNairy County, TN in 1960.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church in Selmer, Mr. Cathey found solace and community within its walls. He shared his love for music by participating in hymns despite not having a strong voice. An active member of the Boy Scouts, he served in district leadership roles and taught merit badge classes.

He enjoyed travel often taking trips with his sons and extended family. He always enjoyed his visits with his brother, John. BV had a love for building models out of cardboard and paper - making military tanks, canons and industrial equipment. He also enjoyed walking which led to him picking up aluminum cans and scrap metal.

Mr. Cathey departed this life on February 27, 2024 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 88 Years, 2 Months, 6 Days. He is survived by two sons, Steven S. Cathey of Milan, TN, BV Cathey III of Selmer, TN; grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a brother, John R. Cathey and wife Naoma of Greer, SC; sister-in-law, Mary Webb of Salem, IL; cousins of Illinois and cousins of Jackson, TN; and a host of friends from all over the country.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Cathey was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Debra Cathey; in-laws, Samuel and Margaret Webb.
