Betty J. Doss

November 2, 1939 — October 15, 2020

On October 15, 2020 our Beloved Betty Jane Basinger Doss joined our Heavenly Father. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a brave struggle with dementia.

Betty is survived by and the cherished wife of Lamar Horner Doss for 62 wonderful years. They were blessed with a deep love for one another and for their daughter, Melinda Leigh Doss of Knoxville. Only after their love of God, Melinda is the pride and joy in their lives.

The daughter of the late Alcie McCullar and Earl Basinger, Betty was born November 2, 1939. She is survived by her dear sister Barbara Jo Dunaway and preceded in death by her brother, Billy Wayne Basinger.

The legacy of Betty's love of God, family and friends will live on through her family. Betty was an inspiration to all who knew her as she always wore a beautiful, radiant smile and offered a kind word for everyone. Betty was a revered employee of Bell South Phone Company in Selmer and Jackson for more than 20 years. Volunteering, tirelessly and selflessly in her community and her beloved First Baptist Church, was one of her greatest joys. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist where she taught Sunday School and served as Church Secretary for many wonderful years. Betty also served as City Alderman with character and great leadership. She was very active in many local civic organizations including Selmer Jaycettes, Pink Ladies Volunteer Group, Senior Circle and Red Hat Ladies Group. Interior design, art, flower arranging and hospitality were among her many gifts. Betty was defined by her love of God, kind and gentle Spirit, grace and humility as she was always there to brighten the lives of everyone around her.

Betty treasured spending time with Horner, Melinda, family and friends. She shared a most special relationship with her great nephews, Reid Hill and Matt Hill, her Angel in Heaven. The love and adoration is mutual as they loved Aunt Betty and Uncle Horner as grandparents. Betty is also dearly loved and will be forever missed by Larry and Debbie Doss of Knoxville, Jimmie and Pat Doss of Knoxville, David and Carolyn Hill of Nashville and Katie Hill of Nashville along with many special nieces and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by additional close family members, Mary Jane and Rowland Kinney, Mr. and Mrs. Lamar S. Doss and Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. Horner, and James R. Dunaway.

On behalf of the entire family, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to Carolyn Crowe and Vickey Wiggins (Betty's wonderful caregivers and friends), Adamsville Nursing Home, nursing staff and Legacy Hospice for their great care, love and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks your consideration of a donation to First Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Betty.

The Family is asking all attendees please wear a mask and social distance for the health and safety of everyone.
