Elizabeth Josephine (Betty Jo) was living in a memory care facility in Huntsville, Alabama, at the time of her death. Her daughter Debie was at her bedside.
Betty, as everyone called her, was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon J Plunk of
Savannah, Tennessee. They were married on February 25th, 1943, in Corinth, Mississippi.
Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, I. C. Walker and Josephine Walker, sister Mary Anita Walker Rogers, brothers Billy Walker, Ross Walker, Creed Walker and his son Jeff, and great nephew Kevin Conaway.
Betty graduated in 1946 from Savannah High School with high honors. She was a substitute teacher in the North Elementary school for several years. She was the owner of Betty’s Style Shoppe for twenty-four years. In December 1973 she sold her business and went to work at Hardin County Bank. When her husband Vernon passed away in 1988 she finished his term as County Court Clerk. She then returned to the bank until 1998, having retired three times.
Betty enjoyed playing with Vernon and son David in the Country Strings band. The band members were all local musicians and played for local charity fundraisers. She was also a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir at First Methodist Church.
Betty was an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution, holding a number of different offices as a member of the local chapter. She also joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy and held a number of different offices as a member of the local chapter.
In 1974 Betty began to write a column for the Savannah Courier for the Olivet Community called “Bits N’ Pieces.” The column gained her popularity and many followers of the column. This led her to compile her column stories and publish a book also called “Bits N’ Pieces of Americana, Observations, Commentations, and Tales, Tall But True.” Betty also wrote a second book – “Walkertown”, and several poems.
Betty leaves behind four children: Ann and George Ingham of Camp Sherman, OR; Mike
Plunk and wife Teresa of Nashville, TN; Debie and husband George Grissom of Huntsville, AL; and David Plunk and wife Kerry of Madison, AL. Betty is also survived by her brother Tom Walker and wife Ann of Virginia; five granddaughters, four grandsons, six great-granddaughters, and two great-grandsons. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.
