Billy Joe Smith, 86, passed from this life Monday morning, July 27, 2015 at his home in Pocahontas.
The husband of Mary Isom Smith, who survives, he was retired from the maintenance department at Thyssen-Krupp where he had worked for 22 years. He was born June 28, 1929, in Corinth, Mississippi, son of the late DeWitt and Margie Mills Smith and lived all of his life in Hardeman County except for 7 years in Memphis. He also had worked as a part-time mail carrier and part-time farmer and enjoyed working with cows. A two year US Army veteran, he enjoyed camping, going to yard sales and auctions, antiquing and looking for anything old and vintage. He had a love of singing and playing the guitar. Mr. Smith was a member of Pocahontas Church of Christ for over 50 years and served as an elder for several years.
In addition to his wife, whom he married on March 3, 1955, survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Teresa (Terry) and Dennis Webster of Middleton, Rita and Randy Tigner of Hornsby; two sons and their wives, Gary B. and Robin Smith of Pocahontas and Randall (Randy) and Jennifer Smith of Pocahontas; 12 grandchildren, Caycee Vaughn, Cayla Arnold, Curtis Smith, Coy Smith, Allison Callahan, Kyle Webster, Drew Webster, Ashley Tigner, Taylor Tigner, Lillie Tigner, Ryan Smith and Jack Smith; 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Smith and Miron Dukes and a sister, Vivian Forshea. The family requests memorial donations in Mr. Smith's name be sent to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (www.cff.org) or to the Pocahontas Church of Christ.
