Billy Wayne Wilbanks, a beloved figure in both his family and community, passed away on April 30, 2025, leaving behind a profound legacy of love, guidance, and sportsmanship. Born on April 29, 1942, Billy dedicated much of his life to teaching and coaching, having retired in 2013 after an illustrious career in education. He was not just a teacher; he was a mentor to countless young athletes, coaching basketball, tennis, softball, little league, and peewee football.
Billy’s passion for sports extended beyond the classroom; he was an ardent fan of the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics, and the Raiders, often sharing his enthusiasm for these teams with family and friends alike. His love for sports was matched only by his commitment to his Christian faith, which guided him throughout his life.
Billy is survived by his devoted wife, Pat Tigner Wilbanks; sons: Rocky, Dennis, Reno, and Jeff Wilbanks. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, Analease Burns, Cortney Wilbanks, Josie Wilbanks, Stephen Wilbanks, Jacob Wilbanks, and Payton Stanfield. He also took immense pride in being a great-grandfather to Dayton and Darby Burns and Emmersynn and Emmalynn Chandler, who brought him much joy and laughter.
He will be dearly remembered by his nephews, Brad Wilbanks, Charlie Wilbanks, Kevin Replogle, Joel Edenfield, and Darryl Edenfield; cousin, Anne Mildred who all fondly recall the guidance and support he provided throughout their lives.
Billy is preceded in death by his parents, Rex Horace and Grace Jewell Mullins Wilbanks; brother, Kenneth Wilbanks; sister, Jeanette Genter; nieces, Pam Edenfield and Carmen Wilbanks.
As we reflect on the life of Billy Wayne Wilbanks, we remember a man who not only imparted knowledge and inspiration but also instilled a sense of community and love amongst those who knew him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
