Charles Raymond Brashier

Charles Raymond Brashier departed this life at 5:00pm on October 31, 2017, at the age of 98 years, six months, and 24 days, at Hardin Medical Center, Savannah, Tennessee, surrounded by family and loved ones.

A native of Hardin County, Raymond was born on April 7, 1919, the youngest of eleven children born to his parents, Elisha and Emily on Hardin Creek. He was raised on the family farm and attended Rose School, also on Hardin Creek.
On June 28, 1941, he married the love of his life, Lochie Mae Pevahouse and fathered two children. A son, Raymond Douglas Brashier and a daughter, Wanda Lee Brashier.

In December of 1944, at the height of World War II, he entered the United States Army. He left the farm on Hardin Creek and completed basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was assigned as a combat infantryman to the 27th Infantry Division, (also known as the “Wolfhounds”) and was a member of an anti-tank gunnery crew. He boarded a naval ship and crossed the prime meridian to fight on the Pacific front in the southern Philippines. Later, after the surrender of Japan, he served as a military police officer during the Allied occupation and disarmament of the Imperial Japanese Army. He returned home to Hardin Creek in April of 1946.

Through the years, he worked as a farmer as well as various other occupations and in the factories around Clifton and Savannah. He and Lochie bought a house in Savannah and lived there over forty years. He was best known as a fixture of the local flea markets in Crump, Tennessee, where he and Lochie worked as vendors every weekend. He was an authority on antique glass and loved to buy and sell.

He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, farming and hunting, wading up and down Hardin Creek with rod and reel in hand. He enjoyed working with his hands, always restoring or fixing something.

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Lochie Mae Pevahouse Brashier, his sister, Estelle Brashier, six grandchildren, Robert Bridges, Tina Kephart, Barry Bridges, Lorri Cooke, Angela Free, and Trevor Brashier, eighteen great-grandchildren, Shannon Boyd, Eli Bridges, Jarrod Dicus, Brittany Stanfill, Jeremy Kephart, Amanda Thompson, Kasha Ricketts, Kirby Bridges, Carrie Cooke-Holt, Jake Cooke, Chloe Cooke, Brian Free, Evan Brashier, Raven Brashier, Riley Brashier, Charlie Brashier, Cooper Brashier and Owen Brashier, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, Zoe Boyd, Madison and Brinley Bridges, Chloe and Lucas Stanfill, Madison Kephart, Ben Thompson, Keeton and Bentley Cooke, Olivia and Thomas Free, and Damon Alexander Brashier, as well as a host of extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Tom, Ken, Joe and Ronald Brashier, sisters Mary Stricklin, Julia Grimes, Jessie Jerrolds, Faye Gant and Ada Gant, his son Douglas Brashier, Daughter Wanda Swope and grandson Damon Brashier.

His quiet wisdom, calm demeanor and love for his family will be missed, but will live on in the lessons he has taught them for generations to come.
