Charles William Lee, Sr. was born in Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1924. His parents were Charlie and Ethel Lee. He attended school at Michie before graduating from Selmer High School in 1942.
He entered the United States Army in May of 1943 and served until September 1945. He was a sergeant in the 246th Signal Operations Group attached to the First Army and served in Europe during the war. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and held five battle stars including Normandy, France, Belgium, The Rhineland, and Germany.
After returning from the war he married his high school sweetheart Beatrice Tackett. They were married for sixty-four years. She passed away in October of last year.
He was a merchant and owned and operated Lee’s Grocery in Selmer. He was also co-owner of Sunshine Laundrette in Selmer and was a retired rural mail carrier. He was a sixty-year member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended Fourth Street Church of Christ in Selmer.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Lee, and two sisters, Pearl Anderson and Ernestine Hyneman. He is survived by sisters Grace Thomas of Selmer and Mary Bassett of LaGrange, Georgia. He is also survived by sons, Charles W. Lee, Jr. (Carol Ann) and Robert K. Lee (Susan), both of Selmer. Grandchildren Rebecca Maddox (Casey) of Hoover, Alabama, Robert Kirk Lee, Jr. of Selmer, Christie Diener (Patrick) of Nashville, William Brinkerhoff of Memphis, and a great-granddaughter Carrie Ann Diener.
