Daniel Downer was born on September 5, 1958, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Leopold P. Downer and the late Noverta Heavner Downer.
Daniel built a life through hard work and dedication. He began his career as a framer before spending many years as a truck driver, a profession that suited his independent spirit and strong work ethic.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Daniel faithfully served his country and was recognized for his exemplary service. During his military career, he was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation (twice), the Sea Service Ribbon (twice), the Good Conduct Medal (twice), as well as the Expert Pistol and Sharpshooter qualifications—honors that reflected his commitment, discipline, and professionalism.
When he wasn't working, Daniel found his greatest peace on the water. He loved sitting along the river, spending time aboard his houseboat, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty of nature. He also enjoyed watching movies and relaxing with family and friends.
Above all else, Daniel treasured his family. Nothing brought him greater happiness than being a father to his son and "Papa" to his three beloved grandchildren. The time he shared with them was the greatest joy of his life, and the memories they made together will be cherished forever.
Mr. Downer departed this life on June 28, 2026, in Bethel Springs, Tennessee, at the age of 67 years, 9 months, and 23 days.
He is survived by his son, DJ Downer and wife, Gena, of Selmer, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Carter Downer, Brooklyn Ellsworth, and Alyssa Ellsworth; his father, Leopold P. Downer of Humboldt, Tennessee; one sister, Victoria Kimball of Hampton, Virginia; and two brothers, Thomas Downer of Finger, Tennessee, and Paul Downer of Nashville, Tennessee.
Daniel will be remembered as a hardworking man, a proud American veteran, and a devoted father and grandfather whose happiest moments were spent with those he loved most. His quiet strength, love of the outdoors, and unwavering devotion to his family leave behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
