Daniel John "PoPo" Phillips
August 25, 1927 — March 24, 2018
Dan "PoPo" Phillips of Savannah, Tennessee was born August 25, 1927 in Plantersville, Texas, the son of the late John S. and Pearl Busa Phillips. he departed this life Saturday, March 24, at the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 26 days.
On May 20, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth B. Merdian at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Anderson, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 67 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joe, Lester, Henry, William, and John Billy Phillips, all of Texas.
He leaves behind three sons, Craig, wife Diana; Gary, wife Lisa; Kevin, wife Pam Phillips; five grandchildren, Justin Phillips, Savannah, Danielle, husband Zach Zulli, Hammond, LA, Lauren, husband Ian Netzel, Camp Lejeune, NC, and Hannah and Houston Phillips, Knoxville, TN; three great grandchildren, Chloe Zulli, Hammond, LA; Kaden Phillips, Savannah, TN, and Charlotte Netzel, Camp Lejeune, NC; Britni Hyde, mother of Kaden and close friend of the family; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan served in the United States Army. His Army training secured a job with Southern Pacific Railroad in Texas for sixteen years. Dan was co-owner of Gayla Industries in Houston, Texas for 18 years. He owned Parris Manufacturing company since 1966, retiring in 1994.
Dan was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 8083 in Savannah, Tennessee, and a member of the American Legion Post 560 in Houston, Texas.
He was a lifelong Catholic and attended St. Joseph in Stoneham, Texas; St. Rose of Lima in Houston, Texas; Christ Our Light in Navasota, Texas; and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Savannah, Tennessee.
The Rosary and visitation will be at Shackelford Funeral Home on Tuesday March 27, Rosary at 5:00 PM and visitation from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, March 28 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Savannah, Tennessee.
In Texas, the Rosary and the visitation will be at Lindley Robertson Holt Funeral Home on Monday, April 2 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and the Funeral Mass Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Plantersville, Texas. He will be laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Savannah, Tennessee and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stoneham, Texas.
