David Anton Powell was born on March 9, 1958, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of the late Henry A. Powell and Helga Scheaer Powell. From an early age, David developed a quiet strength, a strong work ethic, and a deep sense of duty—qualities that would define his life.
David proudly served his country in both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1976 and served until 1979 as a Recovery Specialist, attaining the rank of E-4 Specialist while stationed in Germany. He later continued his military service in the U.S. Air Force from 1982 to 1986, serving as a Tactical Air Force Maintenance Specialist and earning the rank of E-4 Sergeant. His service was recognized with the Army Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
After his military service, David transitioned into civilian aviation and manufacturing work, bringing the same discipline and pride to his career. He was employed by General Dynamics and Capro before later retiring from Air-Evac. Known for his reliability and strong work ethic, David believed in doing things right and standing behind his work.
Above all, David was devoted to his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, finding his greatest happiness in the moments shared with them. His presence was steady and reassuring, and his love was shown through actions more than words. He was also deeply attached to his faithful dog, Ty, who remained a constant companion.
David departed this life on January 17, 2026, in Selmer, Tennessee, at the age of 67 years, 10 months, and 8 days.
He is survived by two daughters, Crystal Lumpkin and husband Darren Wayne of Michie, Tennessee, and Schera Lee and husband Jesse of Ramer, Tennessee; one son, David A. Powell II of Paris, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Taylor Lumpkin, Emily Lumpkin, Grayson Lumpkin, Heidi Miller, Raelyn Lee, and Georgia Powell; one brother, John Powell and wife Megan of Memphis, Tennessee; two nephews, Nick Powell and wife Alexandria of Memphis, Tennessee, and Joshua Powell of Memphis, Tennessee; one niece, Abagail Powell of Memphis, Tennessee; and his loyal dog, Ty.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Powell Brown, and his nephew, Ian Babb.
David Anton Powell lived a life marked by service, hard work, and love for family. His legacy is carried forward in the lives he touched, the family he built, and the quiet strength he showed every day.
