Larry David Kelley, age 80, departed this life on October 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, friendship, and a life well lived.
David was born on July 20, 1946, in Wayne County, to the late Clemmie and Gladys Bateman Kelley. On October 5, 1973, he was united in marriage to Shirley Franks Kelley, who preceded him in death on January 26, 2020. Their years together were an important part of his life, and her memory remained dear to him.
David loved the Lord and never hesitated to share his testimony with anyone willing to listen. His faith was an important part of who he was, and he found joy in telling others what the Lord had done in his life.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, David especially loved basketball. He enjoyed the game both as a player and as a coach, sharing his love of the sport with others along the way. He also loved to travel and make memories with his family. One of his most recent adventures was a family trip to Mount Rushmore this past summer, creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.
David was also a dedicated businessman with a genuine love for people. In 1989, he opened Bale Fashions in Selmer, Tennessee, and later expanded by opening a second location in Henderson. His stores became more than places of business; they were places where he could visit with customers, catch up with friends, and enjoy conversations with everyone who walked through the door. He valued the relationships he built over the years, and his friendly presence will be missed by many. Special recognition goes to Freeda Jones and Reba Weatherford, whose dedication and care helped keep the stores going and who held a special place in David’s life.
David is survived by his three children: Pamela Riley of Nashville, TN; Mike Riley and wife Sherry of Waverly, TN; and Jeff Kelley and wife Amy of Stantonville, TN. He also leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren, Lydia and Luke Kelley, Tiffany Brown and husband Patrick of Dayton, OH and Hunter Riley.
He is also survived by his brothers, Joe Kelley and wife Sue of Savannah, TN and Gene Kelley of Clifton, TN; his sister, Louise Davidson of Clifton, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, David was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Winston Davidson, E.J. Franks, Gene Franks, and William Franks.
David will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his love of basketball, his entrepreneurial spirit, and, above all, his enjoyment of people. Whether sharing his testimony, talking sports, welcoming someone into his store, or traveling with his family, David had a way of making connections that lasted beyond the moment.
Though he will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him, his testimony, the memories he created, and the impact he made on the lives of others will continue to live on. His family takes comfort in the faith he cherished and the hope of eternal life he so freely shared with others.
