Dewey Wayne Mathis was born December 3, 1946 in Hardin County, Tennessee the son of the late Frank and Goldia Owens Mathis.
He was united in marriage to Peggy J. Wyatt on October 16, 1982.
Mr. Mathis grew up in the Childers Hill community and was a graduate of Southside High School. He entered the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict and served almost 12 years. During that time, he served as a Target Radar Azimuth Operator for Battery B, 5th Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery in the 101st Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged from military service in 1976, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Mathis was a truck driver for G and S Truck Line, and also enjoyed doing small engine repair for his friends. He loved to work in the yard and tend his garden, and he was known as "Fifth Wheel" when talking with others on his CB radio. Mr. Mathis was a member of the Adamsville Masonic Lodge #338 and the Stantonville Methodist Church.
Mr. Mathis departed this life on May 20, 2011 in Adamsville, Tennessee at the age of 64 Years, 5 Months, 17 Days. He is survived by his wife of 28 years Peggy J. Mathis of Adamsville, TN; two daughters, Tonyia (Hight) Purvis of Stantonville, TN and Melanie A. Mathis of Ramer, TN; two sons, Dewey Mathew Mathis of Watertown, NY and Nicholas Lynn Ernest of Hendersonville, NC; six grandchildren: Laken Hight, Kyle Purvis, Wayne Mathis, Hunter Mathis, Brooke Butler, Jason Davis; and many extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Childers, and two brothers, Archie L. Mathis and William Mathis.
