Mrs. Dolores Fortune, age 92 of Bolivar, passed from this life peacefully Tuesday morning, June 9, 2009 at her home.
The widow of the late Audra B. "Spud" Fortune, she had lived in Bolivar for the past 62 years. She was born in Chester County July 30, 1916 and graduated from the University of Memphis. She married her husband Christmas Eve, 1942 and worked as a high school teacher for many years. She also helped to run the Service Auto Supply in Bolivar.
Mrs. Fortune was highly involved in the community of Bolivar. She had been a member of the Bolivar First Baptist Church since 1946 and was presently serving as the Sunday School Department Secretary and Treasurer until her death. Formerly, she had served as a Sunday School teacher and department head. She also sang with the Golden Sounds Choir. In addition to her active membership at church, she served others in many ways. During World War II, she worked in the Civil Service as the Chief Subsistence Clerk at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She also served on the Hardeman County Library Board for 52 years, the Association of the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, and organized local beauty pageants for all ages for many years.
She leaves as her survivors two sons, Dr. James E. Fortune and his wife Gina of Memphis and John C. Fortune and his wife Beth of Bolivar; and two grandchildren, Nicole Fortune and Anderson Fortune.
