DONALD EARL HOLMES, SR, 68 of Henderson died Feb. 21, 2010 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Shackelford–Casey Chapel Henderson, TN handling arrangements.
Mr. Holmes was born in Finger, TN Nov. 5, 1941 to the late James Euther and Graple Johnson Holmes. He married Delilah Frye May 26, 1962. He graduated from Chester County High School in 1959 and attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College and Memphis State and also Keegan Broadcasting Institute. He served in the TN National Guard for 7 years. In 1967 he is remembered for being the first announcer on Henderson radio station WHHM AM. He will be remembered for his 29 years of service as a State Park Ranger at Chickasaw State Park. He loved working with the public and doing programming at schools and events with his birds of prey. He loved being the Conductor of the Grandkids Express kid train and using it to help raise money for charities. He could always be spotted at the Relay of Life wearing his metals for another year cancer free. In his lifetime he was involved in many civic and community organizations. He was a charter member of the Chester County Rescue Squad and Henderson Jaycee’s.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Delilah Frye Holmes of Henderson. A son Donald Earl Holmes Jr. (Barbara) Jacksonville, FL. Two daughters of Henderson, Vera Lynn Holmes and Maria Clayton (Denny). He has 5 grandchildren, Brandon and Haley Holmes of Jacksonville, FL Dara, Logan and Ben Clayton of Henderson. He is survived by 3 brothers James Holmes, Mishawaka, IN, Jack Holmes Jackson, TN, Mack Holmes Finger, TN, 5 sisters Inez Etheridge Linden, TN, Mozelle Crouse Henderson, TN, Wanna Faye Crouse Finger, TN, Darlene Herring Wichita, KS, Janice Crouse Pinson, TN, He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul Harold Holmes Murfreesboro TN, Tony Holmes Steele MO, and 1 sister Bonnie Gay Hudson. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephew’s and loved all of his family.
