Obituary

Doris Evelyn (Howard) Conder, 92, of Germantown, TN, passed away on June 21, 2026. Doris was born December 8, 1933, in her grandmother’s house near Shiloh, TN, to Terry and Vostia Jim Howard. Doris attended Michie High School, where she was the school valedictorian and a starter on the basketball team. They had the longest string of victories of any girls teams in McNairy County. In four years, they only lost five games. After graduating in 1951, Doris first attended UT Martin and then completed her BS in Home Economics, now called Family and Consumer Science, at U T Knoxville in 1954. Doris taught at Adamsville High School until she married Glenn Conder from Henderson, TN, on June 1st, 1958. Glenn was in the Air Force at the time. Even though Glenn was in the Air Force, Doris was the one that knew how to fly. She earned her private pilot’s license prior to marrying Glenn. Their wedding was scheduled to take place in Doris’ hometown of Michie but the Air Force had other plans, and they were married at the Glendale Church of Christ, in Glendale, AZ.

About a year later, their first son, Eddie, was born in Phoenix, AZ. Doris taught at Peoria High School, in Peoria, AZ, for a year before the family moved to Memphis in 1961. In 1962, they moved to Germantown, TN, with a population of about 1200 people at that time. Soon afterwards, they became part of the Germantown Church of Christ. That same year their daughter, Cheryl, was born. Then, late in 1964, their son Mark joined the family.

Doris started teaching again in 1965 at Germantown High School and stayed there with the Red Devils for 35 years. She obtained her Masters’ Degree from Memphis State, and 30+ from U T Adult ED. She was Department Chair, FCCLA advisor, on the PTSA Board, received the Teacher of the Month, and the Teacher of the Year Award, and operated an on-site daycare for the Occupational Child Care Class before retiring in 2001.

The Lynn Warren Taylor Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to Doris for the 1999-2000 school year. Doris was inducted into the Beta Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society in 1976. She held many offices as a member including President of the Chapter. She was the recipient of the Evangeline Hartsook State Scholarship and a recipient of the Order of the Rose in 2006 as well as serving on many state committees.

Doris was active in many student organizations. She was an advisor for two HERO members in Star Events in Washington, D.C. plus served as an advisor for several county school events and others on the district and state levels. She also involved her FHA/HERO members in volunteerism with two nursing homes, St Jude, Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, Kids Kan, MIFA, Angel Tree, Easter Seals and Special Olympics.

After retiring, she enjoyed traveling with Glenn, gardening, and watching sports, especially UT Knoxville and Ga Tech.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Terry and Vostia Jim Howard, her husband, Glenn Conder, her daughter, Cheryl Sims of Germantown, TN, and her grandson, Kevin Conder of Atlanta. Doris is survived by her sons, Eddie Conder (Melissa) and Mark Conder (Brenda). She is also survived by eight

grandchildren; Chris Conder, Cody Sims, Chelsea Sims, Collin Sims, Becca Price (Brad), Katie Beth Wright, (Tim), Michael Conder, and Eli Conder (Makensie) and one great-grandson, David Wright.
