IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Richard
Sutton
March 8, 1935 – January 27, 2026
Doris Kay (Richard) Sutton’s soul left this earth on January 27,2026, at the age of 90 years. Born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1935 to the late Mai Del and Dudley Richard, Doris was the eldest of their ten children. She graduated from Ramer High School in May 1953 and had married the love of her life, Burl Sutton, on December 5, 1952. Together they built a beautiful life and raised four children.
Doris was a dedicated and respected Selmer businesswoman, first managing and then owning the Sears catalog store. Then later as an assistant to her sister Gene Ingram in her Home Interiors business. Though she claimed to not be a “joiner”, Doris contributed her time and talents to many organizations. She was a member of the Selmer Rotary Club, Eastview RuritanClub, Pilot Club, Gideon Auxiliary, Selmer Hospital Auxiliary (Treasurer), and Friends of the Library (Treasurer). Her most cherished involvement was with Eastview Baptist Church, where she faithfully served for many years as church Treasurer and as a Sunday School teacher.
Doris lived a full and vibrant life enriched by travel. She and Burl, and their growing family, began their adventures in the 1950s, camping in the Great Smoky Mountains and swimming in the ocean at Destin, Florida. Later they traveled extensively over the country visiting all the States but Alaska. They took many trips with family, including her parents Mai Del and Dudley, her aunt and uncle Tommie and Fred Leohard and hersister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Orval Kirk creating memories treasured by all who were part of them.
A lifelong lover of books, Doris developed her passion for reading early, thanks to her parents. In later years, when travel became harder, she found endless adventure on the printed page- reading an astonishing 20–25 books a month- thanks to the Selmer Library. In addition to books, music was another constant joy in her life. She was not a musician but loved listening. Though she had eclectic tastes she loved old-time string music and cherished listening to her family members and friends play.
The most important thing to Doris was family. Growing up in a close-knit, loving home, she carried those values forward, becoming the heart of her own extended family. As matriarch, she encouraged unity, love, and togetherness across generations.
Doris passed after a short illness surrounded and cared for by her loving family.
