Dorothy Cary was born on August 30, 1934 in Savannah, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Charles Hartford and Vila Zilabee Allen Byram. On July 2, 1955, she was united in marriage to Luther William Cary, who survives. Dorothy departed this life on January 20, 2018, at the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 21 days.
Dorothy was a member of East End United Methodist Church, and was baptized and immersed at Savannah Church of Christ. Before retiring, Dorothy worked as a driver for Southwest Resources, a Mary Kay consultant, the ice cream lady for Hardin County Junior High School, and at the Brown Shoe Factory. In addition to Savannah, Tennessee, she lived in Martin, Tennessee and Knoxville, Tennessee so that her husband could attend college at the University of Tennessee at Martin and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Dorothy played basketball at Hardin County High School, where she was known as "Old Lefty." She loved UT basketball. Dorothy is remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Dorothy is survived by her son, William Allen Cary and wife Leigh Ann of Savannah, Tennessee; daughter, Jeanette Carol Cary Pruitt of Savannah, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Along with her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings, Rex Hector Byram, Hoover Dexter Byram (Hoover), Kenneth Charles Byram (K.C.), Marion Allen Byram (Bucky), Allie Rachael Byram Bradford, Frances Charlyne Byram Williams (Charlie), and 3 other siblings.
