Mr. Thornton passed away Friday morning, October 12, 2012 at
home in Cloverport.
He was a native and life-long resident of Hardeman County, the son
of the late Hubert Lacey and Cercie Willoughby Thornton. Mr.
Thornton married the former Pansy Ruth Brown on November 27,
1951 and they were married nearly 61 years at the time of his
passing.
He proudly served his country in the Army during World War II
having spent 18 months in Europe and Germany. He was a veteran
of the Battle of the Bulge, serving under General George S. Patton.
Mr. Thornton received the sharpshooter medal and four battle stars
among his commendations.
He worked as a tanner at International Shoe Company, later known
as Armira, in Bolivar, retiring after 32 years of service. He was a
long-time member of the Cloverport Baptist Church and enjoyed
gardening, hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Thornton leaves two daughters, Dottie
Parker and her husband, Sammy, of Cloverport and Trish Hughes
and her husband, David, of Brentwood,TN; five sisters, Lillian
Chandler of Bolivar, Katherine Howell of Toone, Margie Clayton
and Janis King, both of Cloverport and Georgia Hillhouse and her
husband, John, of Jackson; five grandchildren, Christie Parker,
Candy Sowder and her husband, Jamie, Sam, Andrew and
Matthew Hughes; and three great-grandchildren, Parker, Caleb and
Jake Sowder.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his parents and a brother,
Hubert Thornton.
