Edith Austin Lay
was born in Hardin County, Tennessee on January 28, 1919 the daughter of the late Waymon Reese and Lucy Callie Thomas Austin.
On January 4, 1937 she was united in marriage to Jack Lay, who preceded her in death on October 4, 1987.
Mrs. Lay had worked for Brown Shoe Company as a seamstress before retiring. She loved quilting, traveling, shopping, and baby-sitting her grandbabies. Mrs. Lay was a member of the Nixon Community and Wesley's Chapel Church.
Mrs. Lay departed this life on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the age of 90 years, 7 months, 2 days.
Mrs. Lay is survived by 4 daughters, Shirley Mathis of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Myra Gates of Lafayette, Georgia, Jackie Matlock and Sharon Richter both of Savannah, Tennessee; 2 sisters, Evalee Gurley and Lola Roberts both of Savannah, Tennessee; 9 grandchildren, Johnny Matlock, Ronny Matlock, Amanda Mathis Whitfield, Stacey Mathis Smallwood, Brandon Mathis, Tony Gates, Corey Gates, Julie Winborn Franks, and Jennifer Winborn; 12 great-grandchildren, Jessica Matlock, Daniel Matlock, Ryan Matlock, Ashley Matlock, Austin Matlock, Hannah Whitfield, Hank Smallwood, Lyla Smallwood, Kurdt Gates, Graham Franks, Mason Franks, and Trae Franks.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Lay was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Sylvia Green, Virgie White, Thelma Matthews, and Lyla Moore; 2 brothers, Roy Austin and Glen Austin; 2 grandchildren, Paul Gates and Mark Gates; 1 great-grandchild, Shelby Franks.
