Edward Francis "Eddie" Murphy, a man of profound humility, sharp intellect, and deep devotion to his family, passed away on May 18, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on July 5, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, New York, to the late John William and Agnes E. Larkin Murphy, Eddie lived a life defined by hard work, simple pleasures, and an enduring love for those around him.
Eddie proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Following his service, while working at a local gas station pumping gas and tinkering on cars, he met a young woman named Carole Ann Sundell. It was the beginning of a beautiful love story. The two were married on August 15, 1959, and Eddie spent the rest of his life completely adoring and doting on her until her passing on April 18, 2022.
Armed with a degree in mathematics, Eddie carved out a successful career in the computer industry. He worked in sales support for NCR/AT&T (among other companies), specializing in the complex world of early computer programming, software, and equipment sales. His mathematical mind also made him an exceptional tutor for anyone struggling with numbers. At home, Eddie was a provider who made sure his family had everything they ever needed, though he ran a tight ship and was famously strict when it came to his children getting their chores done right.
Eddie was a sports fanatic through and through, fiercely loyal to his New York teams. He spent his winters cheering on the New York Rangers and his Sundays watching NASCAR. When it came to baseball, Eddie managed the ultimate New York balancing act: he followed the Mets with a watchful eye but kept his true allegiance clear by supporting the Yankees.
His greatest sports memory, however, came courtesy of his family during the 2007 NFL season. When the New York Giants made it to the Super Bowl to face the undefeated, 17-0 New England Patriots, his children surprised him with tickets to the big game. Eddie sat in the stands and witnessed firsthand as his beloved Giants pulled off the upset, ruining the Patriots' perfect season and bringing the trophy home to New York.
Beyond sports, Eddie loved to travel, especially taking memorable RV trips out west to Montana with his family. But his absolute favorite destination was wherever his family was. He looked forward to times when relatives would visit from all across the country, particularly when those gatherings involved massive seafood dinners surrounded by laughter and storytelling. His children will forever remember him as a wonderful Dad and "Poppy."
Eddie was a man of quiet faith and a parishioner at St. Jude Catholic Church. He was also a lifelong protector of veterans' legacies, holding proud memberships at the VFW in Goshen, New York, and the American Legion in Chester, New York. Though he always joked that his ultimate goal was to live to be 100, the 90 years he gave to this world were packed full of love, integrity, and good memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Carole Ann, and seven siblings.
He is survived by a proud lineage of children; daughters Cathleen Manka and husband Jeffrey of Stamford, CT, and Noreen Hammond and husband Brad of Cresco, PA, son Dennis Murphy and wife Kelly of Henderson, TN. Seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren who will forever carry on his legacy of humility, humor, and devotion.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 11 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bolivar, TN. A reception will follow at Henderson, TN Elks Lodge.
