EDWARD WALLACE SHELBY, 89, died Monday, August 31, 2009 in the presence of his wife of 64 years, Melba Reed Shelby, and only daughter, Reverend Joy Shelby Weathersbee. A longtime resident of Selmer, he served as a medic in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. Retired from Pickwick Electric in 1985, he had been quite active as a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the York Rite, a 61-year member of the VFW, American Legion Post 162, and of Selmer's First United Methodist Church. He and his wife moved to Jackson in 2007, as their health needs increased, where they became Affiliate Members of Aldersgate UMC. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his son-in-law, Reverend Dan Weathersbee and three grandchildren: Isaac, Shelby and Will, all of Jackson. One of eleven children of Perry and Lula Robbins Shelby, deceased, he was preceded in death by W.L. Shelby (Bolivar), Nobel Shelby (Selmer), Thomas Obed Shelby (Covington), Lunelle Shelby Pierce (Scotts Hill), Bobbie Shelby (Scotts Hill), and Dwayne Shelby (Scotts Hill). Ed is survived by siblings Grapel Shelby Davis (Darden, TN), Paulus Shelby (Jackson, TN), Jean Shelby Hensley (Hohenwald, TN), and T.R. Shelby (Jackson Hole, WY). Visitation will be at the Selmer UMC sanctuary 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 5th. Reverend Mike Pilcher will officiate at the funeral service at 1:00 PM with the assistance of Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer. Burial will follow later in the afternoon at Liberty Cemetery in Scotts Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts be made to The United Methodist Church Ed so loved.
