Edwin T. (Big Ed) Atlee Edwin T. "Big Ed" Atlee
Edwin Thomas Atlee, more commonly known as "Big Ed", was born February 20, 1944 in Milan, Tennessee, the son of the late Edwin A. and Mary Priest Atlee. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas, before moving back to Tennessee, where he graduated from U. T. Martin with a B. S. Degree in Geography. He served four years in the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Control Operator and later worked for many years as an Environmental Specialist for the State of Tennessee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; however, many more knew of him for his significant roles in the Boy Scouts of America. Serving over 20 years with the Boy Scouts of America, Ed held many leadership positions within the program, including troop leader, committee member, Scoutmaster for Troop 33 in Savannah, and Eagle Board of Review member. He was also a Vigil Honor member in the Order of the Arrow.
Ed was a man with great heart. He loved his family and friends dearly, and constantly did whatever he could to improve the quality of life of those around him. Whether it was taking a Boy Scout Troop camping, giving one of his great bear hugs or giving one of the thousands of "chicken calls" he made to a child, Ed's love could always be seen. Ed enjoyed cross-stitching and giving his cross-stitching creations to others as gifts, and was a devoted, loving father.
Ed departed this life on December 6, 2009 at his home in Selmer at the age of 65. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Paterson Atlee; his daughter, Beth Atlee; his son, Richard Atlee and wife, Heather; his grandson, Traevon Atlee; his sister, Martha Atlee Ryal and husband, Jim; his in-laws, Alexander and Philomena Paterson; special friends, Mae Wallace, J. D. Inman, and Marquis Smith; as well as countless other friends and extended family that touched his life.
