Emmett Watson Garner

Emmett Watson Garner passed away on May 10, 2026 at the age of 88, after a life filled with music, adventure, and service to his community. Born in Lexington, Tennessee, he was one of seven children to Roy and Johnnie Garner.

Leaving home at the age of 16 in search of new adventures and opportunities, Emmett quickly learned to rely on his determination and resilience. Through hard work and a commitment to education, he became a Tool & Die Engineer and earned his degree from Vanderbilt.

Emmett loved his music, playing at events, nursing homes, benefits, or just for entertainment. Picking and grinning always brought him happiness.

He was a true cowboy at heart. Boots, cowboy hat, big buckle, and a good horse! He appreciated life's simple pleasures and especially loved riding motorcycles! Put him on a loud Harley and you would always see a big smile on his face.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Johnnie Garner; son, Emmett Watson Garner, Jr. "Jim"; five siblings, Matthew Garner, Houston Garner, Merle Garner, Oneda Wallace, and Lillian Garner; and three grandsons, Stephen Miller, James Garner, and Jonathan Garner. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen; his daughter, Deborah (Glenn); granddaughter, Stephanie; sister, Graple; eight great grands, Ethan, Eli, Braiden, Kade, Drake, Beau, Delray, and Blakley; two sisters in law, Bonnie and Marie; nieces and nephews; a host of extended family and friends; and his devoted dog, Precious!

Emmett was an amazing man. He is proof that big dreams can come from small beginnings.

His legacy will forever echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
