Emodene Henson Smith, a beloved soul who brought light and love to the lives of those around her, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2023, in Ramer, Tennessee. She was 81 years old.
Born on April 21, 1942, in Bethel Springs, TN, Emodene was the daughter of Dee and Levada Crabb Henson. Growing up in this close-knit community, she developed values that guided her throughout her life. She attended Rose Creek for school and later graduated from Selmer High School. These formative years laid the foundation for the strong work ethic and determination that defined her decades-long career.
For over 50 years, Emodene dedicated herself as a secretary of a gas company. Through multiple ownership changes, she remained steadfast in her commitment to Heritage Gas Company (formerly Synergy). In addition to her work there, she also served as city recorder for the Town of Eastview and secretary at Ramer School. Emodene's unwavering loyalty and professionalism impacted countless lives.
Emodene had a deep passion for her country as an ardent supporter of the Republican party. She actively volunteered and participated in election days and attended numerous Republican dinners and events. Additionally, she generously donated to local candidates and congressmen. Her collection of Republican party memorabilia spoke volumes about her dedication.
However, it was through motherhood that Emodene truly came alive. She adored her only child, Shawn Smith, with unconditional love and devoted herself wholeheartedly to his upbringing. Throughout Shawn's academic journey from kindergarten to graduation, Emodene meticulously maintained his schoolwork, toys, awards, and certificates. Her pride as a mother knew no bounds.
She was an avid gardener who lovingly tended to her yard, ensuring it was mowed every three days becoming a personal ritual, and she held the belief that her neighbors should maintain the same level of care. Emodene's kind-hearted spirit shone through in times of sorrow when she would collect funds from the community to support grieving families, a testament to her caring nature.
Emodene found solace in her faith and was a member of First Baptist Church in Selmer. She also attended Ramer Baptist Church, where she continued to foster her spiritual connection. Furthermore, she proudly served as a member of the Republican Women of McNairy County and played a vital role in organizing unforgettable family events.
Affection for animals ran deep within Emodene's heart, especially when it came to dogs. Throughout the years, she lovingly cared for a Dalmatian and Yorkies. Among them, Sophie held a special place in Emodene's heart. Sophie remained by her side till the end, enjoying daily car rides and being spoiled with special treats.
She is survived by her son, Shawn Smith of Ramer, TN; two brothers, Leslie Henson and wife Vickie of Middleton, TN, Billy Henson of Bolivar, TN; sister, Peggy Henson of Ramer, TN; nieces, Melissa Watkins and husband Jody of Ramer, TN, Lisa Enders and husband Lewis of Bolivar, TN, Amy Yopp and husband Josh of Middleton, TN, Angie Watson and husband Jason of Middleton, TN; nephews, Chris Henson of Memphis, TN, Benji Henson of Melbourne, FL; and host of extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Emodene was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Suggs.
