Ernest David “E. D.” Price was born on December 13, 1925 in the Mt. Pleasant Community of McNairy County to the late Arvy D. and Ollie Bell Smith Price.
On October 10, 1947, Ernest married his true love, Betty Sue Tull. Mrs. Betty preceded him in death on October 1, 2015 just nine days before their 68th wedding anniversary.
Ernest grew up working on the family farm and sawmill. At the age of 18, he was drafted by the U. S. Marine Corps. After discharge, he went to Memphis and worked for a brief time. When he came home to visit his parents, his father wasn’t running the sawmill. Ernest asked why and his father replied that he didn’t have enough help. Ernest moved home and began helping his father run the sawmill. He and his father worked together moving their mill from timber tract to tract until his father’s death in 1954. Ernest continued moving the mill around until 1956 when he set it up at its present location. Ernest and Betty worked faithfully together at Price Sawmill until he semi-retired in 1992. After a few trips, he came back to the sawmill and worked alongside Keith until the age of 87. When his health begin to fail, his only wish was to come to the sawmill, sit on the front porch, watch and listen to it run. He often said “listening to the mill was as good as a dose of medicine.”
He was a member of Buena Vista United Methodist Church, Tennessee Forestry Association, McNairy County Forest Landowners Association and National Rifle Association.
On July 7, 2017, at the age of 91 years, Ernest departed this life peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by a son, Ernest Keith price and wife Jo Doris; a daughter, Vickie Sue Archer and husband Brian; two grandchildren, Mollie Suzanne Russell and Christopher Gray Russell and fiancé, Emily Frye; two great grandchildren, Stella Adysyn Russell and Andy Russell; a sister, Quinice Tull and husband Leo; two brothers, Larry Price and John Price and wife Maggie; an aunt, Jo Edna Howell of Hornsby, TN.
In addition to his parents Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Price and a brother, Melvin D. Price.
