Gayle Brooks, a respected community leader and beloved resident of Selmer and McNairy County, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in Selmer on June 17, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on June 18, 1941, in Bethel Springs, TN, Gayle's life was marked by unwavering dedication to her Lord, her family, her community, and her professional pursuits.
A proud graduate of Bethel Springs High School, Gayle embarked on a career that reflected her commitment to the well-being of children and families. She served as the School Nutrition Supervisor for McNairy County Schools for 25 years, following earlier work in Chester County. Throughout her career, she was known for her personable demeanor, positive attitude, and a genuine concern for others, qualities that inspired those around her regardless of circumstance.
Beyond her professional achievements, Gayle played a significant role in local governance and development. She was the Chairman of the McNairy County Republican Party, a position that highlighted her leadership and dedication to civic engagement. She served as Secretary for The Selmer/McNairy County Industrial Development Board and was a charter member, having served continuously since 1995. During her tenure with the IDB, Gayle contributed her time, intellect, and skills to promoting the economic and industrial growth of the area. Additionally, Gayle was a committed member of the Quinco Board of Directors.
Her spiritual journey included membership in the Safe Harbor Non-Denominational Church when it was active and attendance at People's Tabernacle in Savannah whenever she had opportunity. She truly loved the Lord with all her heart, soul, and mind.
Gayle is survived by four children: Regina Brooks, Susan Whitaker (Duke), Mike Brooks (Kathy), and Derrick Brooks (Charissa). She leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Steven Whitaker (Ann Marie), Brian Brooks, Erik Brooks, Samantha Jay (Levon), and Lindsey Brooks (Darren); and three great-grandchildren: Parker, Maddox, and Elliott. Other family members include Clay Thomas (Dawn) and their children, Avery and Zach.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 53 years, Wayne H. Brooks; her parents, Theodore and Eula Wagoner Miller; and her brother, John Richard Miller.
Gayle Brooks’s legacy is one of dedication, positivity, and servant leadership. Her contributions to her family and community and her unwavering spirit will be remembered with profound respect and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
