George Henry Barnhart

Funeral services for Master Sergeant (Retired) George Henry Barnhart, 79, were conducted from the Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, November 13, with Brother Kyle Wishert officiating.



George passed away in the evening of November 10 at the Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He had been a resident at NHC/Scott in Lawrenceburg the last four weeks following a massive stroke from which he never was able to recover. He had been in ill health for several years.



He was a son of the late John Carson and Lola (White) Barnhart of Mays Landing, Jersey. He was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Pleasantville High School in New Jersey. Following his graduation from high school, George enlisted in the United States Air Force and made the military service his career, retiring in 1969, having seen service in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well as the period of time known as the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a draftsman/illustrator in the Audio/Visual Information Section of the Joint Services and Mapping Service. During his military career, he was awarded numerous medals and commendations. He attended the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. He is survived by his wife, Paula Sunny Barnhart of Waynesboro, TN. and a host of friends and associates around the world. He was a member of the Olive Hill Baptist Church in nearby Olive Hill, TN. During his retirement years, George found comfort and enjoyment in his church, his friends, his gardens and was an avid birder and lover of all woodland creatures. He did not hunt or fish nor did he hold membership in any organized organizations other than his church.



In keeping with his wishes, the family requests that donations be made to the Butterfly Foundation c/o Wayne County Bank in lieu of flowers.



He was laid to rest in Memorial Gardens in Waynesboro on Friday, November 13 with full military honors as befitting a veteran of not one but two wars. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County in charge of the arrangements.



Visitation will be on Thursday, November 12, 6:00--8:00 pm and on Friday, November 13, 8:00 am until service time at Shackelford Funeral Home, Waynesboro
