George Washington Bates Sr. of Florence, AL was born December 25, 1922 in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, the son of the late John H. and Dora Ella Long Bates. He was united in marriage to Virtie Pauline Smith on September 24, 1941and she preceded him in death on April 3, 2009.
Mr. Bates was a farmer and mechanic and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Bates departed this life on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at his home at the age of 88 Years, 3 Months, 8 Days.
He is survived by sons, George W. Bates Jr., Edward E. Bates, Tommy Lee Bates all of Florence, AL, and Paul Howard Bates of Ocala, FL; daughters, Marilyn Riner, Connie Meadows, Brenda Marks of Florence, AL, and Barbara Jean Clemmons of Lexington, AL; 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Wilburn Bates of Florence, AL; sister, Verna Murphy of Rogersville, AL; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Bates was preceded in death by sons, James Vernon and Randy Wayne Bates; great-grandson, Keanan Troy Pounders; brothers, Boyd, Bill, Carmel, and Albert Bates; sisters, Leona Price and Effie Murphy; daughters-in-law, Gladys and Pam Bates.
Services will be Monday, April 4, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, Collinwood , Tennessee, with Johnny Ray Davis and Robert Huffaker. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery, Florence, Alabama with Shackelford Funeral Directors directing. Visitation will be Sunday, April 3, 2011 from 6 pm to 9 pm and Monday, April 4, 2011 from 11 am until service time at the funeral home.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.
