George E. Mitchell, Jr., 83, of Bolivar, departed this life Monday, May 8, 2023, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born Thursday, March 7, 1940, in Bolivar, son of the late George E. Mitchell, Sr. and Mildred Maurine Ross Mitchell, living his whole life here. He was a farmer all of his life, and enjoyed working outside. He served his country in the National Guard for 6 years. Mr. Mitchell was an active part of his community, working especially with the Ebenezer and Silerton areas and served on many boards, including Farm Bureau, where he was a board member and honorary lifetime member, was director of Hardeman/Fayette Co-Op, and received Farmer of the Year for several years from the Soil Conservation Service. Not one to take many, if any vacations, he loved restoring antique tractors, and if he did go anywhere, it would be to an antique tractor pull. Mr. Mitchell was very much a family man and extremely proud of his grandsons. His family states, "We have been left with one of the best examples of what Christian love should be. Kind and generous, always doing for others, yet he was also firm, and he expected everyone to act and do as they knew they should." He was a lifelong member of Bolivar First Methodist Church where he served on many boards and was an active member of the Methodist Men.
Survivors include his wife of almost 61 years, Glynda Jones Mitchell; a daughter, Bonnie Mitchell Breeden (Gregg) of Whiteville; a son, Gem Mitchell (Vicki) of Bolivar; a sister, Jane Mitchell Powell of Hickory Valley; four grandsons, Dan Breeden (Ashley), Clay Mitchell (Kyley), Lane and Ross Mitchell; and two great grandchildren, Kaizen Mitchell and Viola Rose Breeden. Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to Bolivar First Methodist Church or Union Cemetery.
