It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Lee Montgomery (G.L.), a beloved man whose life was filled with bravery, commitment, and passion. Born on June 1st, 1943 in Florence, AL, George was the son of the late Lee Olis and Lillian Horton Montgomery. On December 16th, 1977, George found his true soulmate when he married Marianne Nossen. Their union was a testament to love and devotion, inspiring all who knew them. George dedicated twenty years of his life to serving his country in the United States Army, followed by fifteen years of Civil Service. He exemplified courage and honor throughout his career, earning five Bronze Stars during his two deployments to Vietnam. A valued member of The American Legion in Collinwood and the esteemed 516th Engineering Company, George held a special place in his heart for his fellow comrades. He cherished the bond they shared and valued their camaraderie deeply. Beyond his military achievements, George had a deep love for nature and all its wonders. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in the beauty of the world around him. Whether he was hunting or fishing, George felt a profound connection to the wilderness and its creatures. In addition to his love for nature, George was also a passionate Tennessee Volunteers Fan. His allegiance to the team was unwavering, and he found joy in supporting them through victories and defeats.
In addition to his parents, Mr. George was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Britny Montgomery, and Alexandria Rodriguez; a brother, Bobby Montgomery; Nephew, Donald Keith Montgomery.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Marianne (Nossen) Montgomery of Athens, AL; a daughter, Sheri Gregory and Clint; three sons, Paul Montgomery and Amanda, Anthony Montgomery, Ricky Montgomery; a brother, Donald Ray Montgomery and Brenda; a sister, Melba Montgomery and David; Thirteen grandchildren, Hunter Montgomery, Brendan Montgomery, Jaxon Montgomery, Christopher Montgomery, Zachary Montgomery, Alleyna Dykes and Jesse, Kelsi McKinney, Emily Hudson, Addysyn Montgomery, Hazel Montgomery, Morgan Hadsall and Colby, Lillian Montgomery, Joanna Montgomery; Sister-in-law, Judy Berry Montgomery; Several Nieces and Nephews; A host of family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Collinwood from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Brothers Junior Overstreet and Chad Balentine officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens of Wayne County in Collinwood.
