Gerald Edwin Mathis was born October 18, 1938 in Waynesboro, Tennessee the son of the late George Woodrow and Hazel Agnes Pope Mathis. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by brother, Gene Marshall Mathis, sisters, Jeanette Mathis Brison and Pamela Kaye Mathis Terry, and nephew, Gene Marshall Mathis, Jr. Mr. Mathis died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville at the age of 72 Years, 5 Months, 15 Days.
A self employed businessman, he owned and operated Gerald's Dollar Store for approximately 26 years. A well known citizen of Waynesboro, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a 32nd degree mason serving in the Waynesboro Lodge.
He is survived by three daughters, Betina Faye Mathis Sanders and husband Doug, Brenda Gale Mathis Butler and husband Patrick, and Aundra Lee Mathis Ray and husband Jason
mother of his children, Fayetta Lynch Mathis, all of Waynesboro, TN;
6 grandchildren, Garrett Douglas Sanders, Hillary Jhea Ray,
Hannah-Kate Marrs, Wesley Adam Sanders, Boston Cain Ray,
and Sawyer Mathis Ray; 2 step-granddaughters, Ashley Nicole Butler and Abigail Lauren Butler;
a brother, Benny R. Mathis and wife Delores of Waynesboro, TN;
a sister, Joyce W. Jones of Edmond, OK;
nieces and nephews that he held dear to his heart.
Services will be Wednesday, April 6, 2011 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church in Waynesboro with H.H. Hurst officiating. Masonic Rites following services. Burial will follow in the North Highland Cemetery with Shackelford Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers are Garrett Sanders, Wesley Sanders, Boston Ray, Bryan Mathis, Mat Jones, and Curtis Jones.
