Gladys Clayton
of Henderson,TN: Gladys Woodward Clayton age 88, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
She was born in Finger and reared in both Finger and Henderson. She was the daughter of the late Nolus Guy and Sara Amanda Naylor Woodward. She went to school in Chester County and in 1942 married Hoyt Malone Clayton. They made their home in McNairy County for several years and Mr. Clayton entered the U.S. Army. When Mr. Clayton returned from the military the family moved to Henderson. This is when Hoyt and Gladys opened Gladys Restaurant, which they both owned and operated from 1955 to 1985. They retired in 1985 and returned to McNairy County to make their home. Mr. Hoyt passed away in 2000. Mrs. Gladys loved cooking pies and was an active member of the Old Friendship Baptist Church.
She was survived by a son Ricky Clayton of Bethel Springs, nine grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren.
She was preceded by a son Gary Clayton, a brother Ceciro Woodward and two sisters Justine Trobaugh and Lorene Dismuke.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday at the Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Rev. Iran Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Friendship Cemetery in Chester County. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Casey Chapel on Wednesday.
