She was born May 23, 1921 the second child of Atkins Carter, Sr. and Minnie Lois Smith Carter near Grove Springs, TN. She attended schools in Grove Springs, Enville and Henderson.
She worked in the family grocery and feed store on Front Street in Henderson. She married Don L. Colbert Sept. 30, 1939 and the business became Carter and Colbert Grocery, they had a meat market and produce Company on Washington Street during the 1940’s. She worked in the office in The Farm Boy Egg and Produce Business after moving to Memphis. In 1973 they returned to Henderson where she did the bookkeeping at the Massey Fergerson Dealership where they partnered with W.T. Colbert. She retired to care for her husband until his death in 1990. She was a member of the Estes Church of Christ and later the Henderson Church of Christ.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Jean Colbert Helt and husband Allen and Barbara Ann Colbert Cole all of Henderson; three grand daughters, Paula Donnette Helt Cassidy (Jamie), Elissa Robbette Helt Powell (Robbie) and Andrea Ella Cole Logan; two great grandsons, Mattlock Sinclair Alexander (Sheila) and Anthony Wayne Logan, II; two great –great grandsons, James Anthony Alexander and Elijah Tyler Alexander; several nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don L. Colbert in 1990, two brothers, Roy A. Carter and Atkins Carter, Jr. and a sister, Velma Carter.
