Henderson, TN: Glenn Howard Harris age 83 passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 at his home in Henderson. He was born on September 02, 1934 to the late John Warden and Bernice Cherry Harris. His grandparents were John Ward and Clinton Veronica Deming Harris and Marcus McKenzie and Drucilla Adeline Bunch Cherry of Chester.
His was born in Henderson and the family moved to the Huntersville Community in Madison County, Tennessee when he was two years old. He attended College Street Elementary, Jackson Junior High, and graduated from Northside High School in 1953. He worked for McGee Ross Hardware and Restaurant Supply Store in Jackson for a few years before being drafted into the U.S. Army where he served with distinction until medically discharged. Then he began a career in 1957 that spanned 33 years with the Tennessee Department of Transportation as a Road Design Engineer. He was on the team that designed Interstate 40 from Jackson to the Tennessee River. He designed or straightened numerous State Highways throughout West Tennessee such as Hwy. 69 from Alabama line through Parsons to Camden, the by-pass around Selmer, widened North Highland Street in Jackson and Hwy.64 through Somerville, Hwy 412 from Jackson to Mississippi River near Dyersburg. Then he was promoted and served as Design Engineer Supervisor over all State Highway design from Mississippi River to the Tennessee River until his retirement in 1990.
He married Sylvia Gayle Johnson, the daughter of the late John Willis and Ola Mae Russell Johnson, June 24, 1967 at the Henderson Church of Christ and they made their home in Henderson, Tennessee where she taught at Freed Hardeman College and he was employed at TDOT.
Glenn was an active member of the Henderson Church of Christ, where he counted church attendance and ushered for 45 years.
He leaves his wife, Sylvia Harris; daughter Julie Anne Harris Birl; son, Mark Russell Harris; grandson, Dr. Drew (Kayla) Blackstock; granddaughter, Brandi Lynn Blackstock (Andrew) Hill; great granddaughters, Ola Jean, and Georgia Rose Blackstock, and great grandson, Shepard Northdrop Hill, all of Jackson, TN; his sister, Betty Frye Holifield; niece Wanda Jean Frye (Bobby) Hudson; nephews, Joe (Tina) Frye; Anthony Lewis Frye; great nieces, Amy Brook Frye(Cody) Taylor and their son Abel Taylor; and Amber Jean Frye (Dustin) Cupples and their son Gavin Cupples.
Funeral services will be at the Henderson Church of Christ on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 4:00 pm with Mike McCutchen, Dr. Drew Blackstock, Andrew Hill and Ben Flatt officiating. The burial will follow at the Henderson City Cemetery for family and friends. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The family also requests memorials be made to the Glenn H. and Sylvia Harris Scholarship Fund at Freed Hardeman University.
