Obituary

Gloria Jean Wilson, a beloved educator and cherished family matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, in Jackson, Tennessee. Born on May 7, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, she dedicated her life to teaching and nurturing others, leaving an indelible mark through her work and the lives she touched.

Gloria’s distinguished career spanned two decades as a teacher of sign language at the University of Indiana. Her commitment to education was evident in the way she inspired her students and colleagues alike. She contributed significantly to the field, using her skills to bridge communication gaps and advocate for inclusivity and understanding.

A proud native of Memphis, Gloria spent many years there before relocating to the Somerville area in Fayette County, where she lived for the last five years of her life. Throughout her life, she nurtured a deep love for family, storytelling, and the simple pleasures that brought joy to her days.

Her hobbies reflected her vibrant spirit and keen interests; she was an avid collector of antique jewelry, found enjoyment in reading John Grisham novels, and delighted in fishing trips. However, it was time spent with her grandchildren that warmed her heart the most. Gloria was renowned for her engaging storytelling, capturing the imaginations of her family with tales that spanned generations.

She is survived by her devoted son, Doug Wilson, and his wife Yvonne, as well as her daughter Julia Gaye Mitchell and her husband Shane. Gloria’s spirit of family extended through her many siblings: Artrell Marie Bridgewater and her husband Monty, Nannette Beshard and her spouse Will, Vickie Cox, Rose Hodan, Gail Moore and her husband Mike, Peggy Miller and her husband Dave, Sonya Humphrey and her husband Ray, and Daphnia Smith and her husband David. Her legacy continues through 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren who will carry forward her memory and the warmth she shared.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Russell James and Ella Mae Arnold Pinner, her husband Jerry Lee Wilson, and children Karen Leigh Piercy and her grandson Joey Wilson. She also mourned the loss of her sister Julia Pinner, sister Mary Alice Keith, and a great-grandchild, Noah Piercy.

Throughout her life, Gloria Wilson was a pillar of kindness, intelligence, and resilience. Her generous heart and profound love for her family will be remembered by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy enriched by her dedication to teaching, her passionate interests, and the countless moments she spent creating lasting memories with those she loved.

Gloria will be deeply missed, but her spirit, stories, and love will live on in the hearts of her family and all whose lives she touched.
