Gwen Smith Harris departed this life on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at her home in Macon, Georgia at the age of 76 years, 10 months, and 17 days. She was born in Savannah, Tennessee on January 23, 1941, the daughter of the late Avon and Jewel Smith. On May 16, 1959, she was united in marriage and began her journey with Cornelius (Nick) L. Harris, who survives.

While living in Savannah, Gwen was a member of the Young Republicans, the Savannah Little Theatre Productions, and was the past president of the Business Professional Women's Club. Gwen also served as an officer of the Hardin County Cancer Society, the past president of West Tennessee Activity Coordinators Association, and participated in the state-sponsored Hee Haw Benefit for the Cancer Society. In Savannah, Tennessee, she had worked at Flowertime Flowers, North Elementary School, where she was a Teachers Aide, and Hardin County Nursing Home, where she was the Activities Coordinator. She also worked in Child Support Enforcement and HRS Aging and Adult Services in Key West, Florida, as a Retirement Counselor at the Atrium in Jacksonville, Florida, an office manager at Shomaker and Co in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a Secretary at Chattanooga State Technical College, Senior Administrative Secretary at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, Sales Coordinator at Southern Steel Industries, and Secretary at Orlando North Aviation at Sanford, Florida. Gwen loved her family. She loved the beach, family pictures and geneology, cross stitching, tole painting, and puzzles. Gwen loved being a Southern Lady, Nick's wife, a mother to her 3 boys and a doting grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Cornelius (Nick) L. Harris of Macon, Georgia; sons, Clifford Lee Harris and wife Lisa of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Jeffrey Alan Harris of Macon, Georgia, and Phillip Gregory Harris of Baltimore, Maryland; grandchildren, Jessica D. Purgason and Nicholas A. Harris; and brothers, Stephen Douglas Smith of Savannah, Tennessee and Charles Gerrold Northcutt of Charlotte, North Carolina.
