Hazel B. Walker Bates was born May 21, 1932 in Lauderdale County, Alabama, the daughter of the late John Hampton and Lou Etta Lemay Walker. She was united in marriage to Wilburn Newton Bates on May 13, 1946.
Mrs. Bates was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She departed this life on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at her home in Florence, Alabama at the age of 77 Years, 4 Months, 29 Days.
She is survived by her husband, Wilburn Newton Bates of Florence, AL; sons, Arthur Newton Bates and Charlie Henry Bates both of Cloverdale, AL, Jerry A. Bates, Jimmy Ray Bates, and Joey N. Bates all of Florence, AL, Larry Joe Bates of Java, AL, and Clifford Bates of Leoma, TN; daughters, Betty Wallace and Nancy Bates both of Cloverdale, AL; a brother, Billy Ray Walker of Florence, AL; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by brothers, Hollis Bobo, Pete Walker; sisters, Mable Johnson, Alma Christine Hyde, Edna Marie Gibson; great-grandchildren, Christopher McGuire and Nancy Christine Wallace.
Services will be Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Home, Collinwood, Tennessee, with Emerald Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the McGee Cemetery, Waynesboro, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County directing.
Pallbearers will be Junior, Adam, Chris, Daniel, Brian, and Billy Bates.
