Helen J. Zaller, age 91 of Bolivar, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Pine Meadows Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bolivar.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at St. Mary Church with the Rev. Wayne Arnold officiating. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar were in charge of arrangements.
The wife of Frank A. Zaller, Cdr. USN Retired, former Administrator of Western State Hospital and Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health for the State of Tennessee, they celebrated over 68 years of marriage. She was born March 24, 1921 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Frank and Helen Samsel and moved to Bolivar in 1969. A graduate of Bensalem High School, she was a purchasing agent for the US Signal Corps before becoming a wife, homemaker and mother. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and its Women's Club. An avid bridge player, she was also a member of the Bolivar Duplicate Bridge Club.
In addition to her husband, whom she married on September 21, 1943, survivors include four daughters, Barbara Burke of Wellesley, MA, Kathleen (Gerald B.) Franceski of Union Dale, PA, Margaret Eshleman of Unionville, PA and Renee (Patrick) McCarthy of Choctaw, OK; three sons, Frank M. Zaller of Bolivar, James L. (Janice) Zaller of Sarasota, FL, and Lcdr. Christopher J., USN Ret. (Ann) Zaller of Bolivar; a former daughter-in-law, Betty Zaller of Omaha, NE; eighteen grandchildren, George (Sue) Burke, Catherine Shahin, David B. Franceski, Michael Franceski, John P. (Erica) Franceski, Eric (Liz) Eshleman, Amy L. (Richard) Cowan, Rhonda (Jerry Wayne) Avent, Dawn Zaller, Michael (Shannon) Zaller, Matthew (Debbie) Zaller, Paul (Amanda) Zaller, Stephen (Erin) Zaller, Phillip Zaller, Lauren (Elliott) Moore, Andrew Zaller, and Sean and Kyle McCarthy; twelve great-grandchildren, Orla Burke, Yasmine, Sarah and Aiyah Shahin, Jack Eshleman, Jordan Avent, Jonathan and Jackson Martin, Kennedy Grace and Zane Zaller, Constance Zaller and Lola Grace Franceski; a brother, Ben Samsel of Langhorne, PA; a very special niece, Eleanor Brown of Scranton, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Trina; a son, Timothy; two sons-in-law, George Burke and Clyde Eshleman; a grandson, Francis J. Burke; two sisters, Frances Stopyra and Anna S. Cappe; and five brothers, Frank, John, Walter, Stanley, and Ted Samsel.
The family requests memorials be directed to St. Mary Church, Bolivar, Tennessee.
