H.J. was united in marriage to Mary Lou Kaucher on May 23, 1985. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business agriculture and dedicated over 25 years of his career to Farm Bureau. Later, he worked as a financial consultant before retiring at the age of 81.

His commitment extended beyond the church to his community and country, having served honorably in the United States Army. He had a significant impact on local governance and community projects, serving on the Board of Directors at First Federal Savings & Loan, chairing the Republican Party of McNairy County, and being an active member of the Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his notable contributions to the community.
