Herbert Odis Bailey, born December 29, 1933, to Noblin Herbert Bailey and Myrtie Bell Freeman Bailey, lived a long life marked by hard work, devotion, and a deep love for his family.
His greatest pride and joy were his children: Pamela G. Bailey Brown, and her husband, Joe L Brown, David Clark Bailey, and his wife, Rachel Bailey, and Misti Marie Bailey Pickett and her husband, Ricky Walter Pickett, Jr. He was especially proud of his nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and he cherished every opportunity to visit with them and keep up with their lives.
Herbert worked for 30 years at Preston Carroll Construction Company, where he was known for his many skills. From truck driving, welding and operating heavy equipment to mechanics and woodworking, he was the kind of man who could fix or build just about anything.
After retiring, he dedicated himself to caring for his wife, Patricia Ann “Pat” Cagle, whom he married on June 27, 1952, until her passing on May 27, 1999. He loved her deeply and spoke of seeing her again in Heaven in his final days.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting and working in his yard. He was proud to build furniture for his family and in his later years, his dogs became his constant companions and close friends.
Herbert had a personality that was hard to forget. He loved to “pick on” people, and if he gave you a hard time, you could be sure you were one of his favorites. He had a way of aggravating you just enough to make you smile—and you’d probably get one of his many stories, which somehow got a little better each time he told them.
He loved his church family and often spoke about how much it meant to him. He thought highly of his pastor, Brother Daniel, and enjoyed visiting with him when he was able, sometimes staying and talking for hours.
Herbert Odis Bailey will be remembered as a devoted husband, a hardworking man, and a proud father and grandfather who loved his family. We find comfort in knowing he is now at peace, reunited with his beloved Pat, and resting in the presence of the Lord.
