Major Hugh Jennings Townsend, Jr. U. S. Army, Retired
Hugh Jennings Townsend, Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee on July 17, 1944, the son of the late Hugh Jennings, Sr. and Jonnie Ramer Townsend. He passed away at his home in Bethel Springs, Tennessee on Sunday, November 27, 2011, following a lengthy illness. He was united in marriage to Susan Randall Austin on April 17, 1988. Hugh was a member of the First Christian Church in Adamsville, Tennessee.
Funeral services will be on Friday, December 2, 2011, at 1:00 PM, at First Christian Church in Adamsville, Tennessee with Gary Henline officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Maggie Jones Cemetery. Visitation will be at the First Christian Church in Adamsville on Thursday, December 1, 2011, beginning at 4:30 PM. Serving as Pallbearers will be Todd Gean, Bobby Hodges, Kenny Brewer, Rick Wood, P. W. Plunk, and Andy Jones.
Major Townsend retired from the United States Army after 29 1/2 years, having proudly served 3 of those years in Vietnam. He earned several medals including Bronze Star, Purple Heart, 2 Army Commendation Medals with Oak Leaf Cluster - Quadruple (received for different tours of duty in Vietnam), National Defense Service Medal and Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Commendation Medal, National Guard Service Medal, Tennessee Volunteer Medal, and 5 Overseas Bars. He was a graduate of Marianna High School and earned a B.B.A. Degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. He retired as an Engineer from General Electric in Selmer after 31 years service.
Survivors are his wife of 23 years, Susan Randall Townsend; four daughters, Sonya Fletcher and husband Brice of Widener, Arkansas, Tiffany Johnson and husband Keith of Selmer, Tennessee, Shasta Hollins and husband Steve of Baldwyn, Mississippi, and Misty Austin Lawrence and husband Michael of Arlington, Tennessee; a son, Kelly Austin of Ramer, Tennessee; a brother, Guy Townsend and wife Jeanne of Berea, Kentucky; a sister, Ann Smith and husband Doug of Stantonville, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; 9 nieces, 2 nephews, multiple friends, extended family, and devoted church family. Hugh was also surrogate father to several foreign exchange students.
He was an avid deer hunter, hunter safety instructor, scuba diver, and pilot. He devoted his life to his family, country, and helping others. Family requests that any memorial donations be made in Hugh's honor to Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org.) or First Christian Church in Adamsville.
