Jacqueline Travis Hamilton

Jacqueline Travis Hamilton was born January 10, 1919 in Henderson, TN the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Barton Travis.

She was united in marriage to James W. Hamilton on October 28, 1941. Mr. Hamilton preceded her in death on December 16, 1992.

She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts from Memphis State University. She also attended Bethel College in McKenzie, TN and Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN.

Mrs. Hamilton was a retired school teacher from the old Selmer High School and McNairy Central High School. She taught typing, shorthand and/or keyboard for 33 years. She was a member of Stephen Foster Music Club, McNairy County Retired Teachers Association and a former member of Selmer Junior Civic League. She was a member at Fourth Street Church of Christ and loved her church family. She was a strong supporter of Freed-Hardeman University.

She enjoyed playing the piano at school, community events and teaching others to play. She loved her Tuesday bridge club friends and entertained regularly for luncheons and club meetings.

She was affectionately known to most everyone as "Miss Jackie," to her grandchildren she was "Jack" and would often share her words of wisdom. The following are just a few of Miss Jackie's words:

She loved her former students and stated that "one of the most important things you can do for a child is to give him/her an education."

When life sent trials and tribulations her way her advice was to "shoulder it."

When asked by her grandson, "Jack are you going to church Sunday?," her reply was "Are they having it?"

Often people would say you raised four sons, her reply was "Four sons and James."

Mrs. Hamilton departed this life on November 26, 2015 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 96 Years, 10 Months, 16 Days. She is survived by three sons, Jim Travis Hamilton and wife Patty of Columbia, TN, Tom Neal Hamilton and wife Beth of Selmer, TN, Michael Willard Hamilton and wife Ann of Mt. Pleasant, TN; six grandchildren, Jim Travis Hamilton II, John Davidson Hamilton, Vance Wilson Hamilton, Barton Patrick Hamilton, Kimberly Hamilton, Kelly Hamilton; three great grandchildren, John Travis Hamilton, William Stone Hamilton, Eve Emmaline Hamilton.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by a son, William Ernest (Bill) Hamilton.
