James Allen Smith, a beloved figure whose laughter echoed through the lives he touched, was born on March 1, 1961, in Bolivar, Tennessee. He became a cherished soul within his community, known to all as "PaPa," a name that encapsulated the warmth and love he extended not only to his own family but to everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
James’s career as a timber cutter for Jackie Howell Timber Cutting was marked by his dedication and hard work before life took a different turn with disability. Even during challenging times, his spirit remained unbroken, embodying resilience and humor. He was well-known for his playful nature, always ready with a joke and a smile, effortlessly brightening the days of those around him.
His heart, however, belonged to his family, who meant the world to him. He was a proud father to Amy Agee and Mitch of Middleton; a devoted brother to his sisters – Cathy and William Shields of Hornsby, Angie and Greg Ingle of Selmer, Tammy Swain of Stantonville, and Kelly Smith of Middleton; and a caring brother to his brothers – David and Jeannie Smith of Middleton, Danny and Rena Smith of Selmer, and Brad Smith of Jackson. His grandchildren, Cheyenne Maness, Landon and Journie Agee, and Jaxton Smith, brought unparalleled joy to his life, while the arrival of his great-grandchild, Kai Bennett, filled his heart with pride and hope for the future.
James’s canine companion, Buddy, shared in his adventures, loyal beside him as he reveled in the simple pleasures of fishing and collecting cans, hobbies that allowed him to connect with nature and his fond memories. A lifelong Baptist, his faith anchored his life, guiding him with strength and peace.
He departed this world on June 11, 2025, in Jackson, Tennessee, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. James was predeceased by his parents, James Marlin Smith and Doris Ann Herman Smith; his infant sister, Jeannie Marie Smith; and his nephew, Patrick Ingle. As we remember him, let us celebrate the joy and light he brought into our lives.
The visitation honoring James will take place on June 15, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM, both held at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Middleton, Tennessee.
James Allen Smith leaves us richer for having known him, a granddaddy to many, a jokester of unmatched charm, and a man who will forever be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and love. His legacy will continue to inspire and bring smiles to those who carry his memory in their hearts.
