James (Jimmy) Cates, Jr. was born January 15, 1946 in Covington, TN the son of the late James Leon and Viola Elizabeth Smith Cates.
He was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Gann on June 4, 1966.
Bro. Cates served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Adamsville, Tennessee for the past 28 years. He was a true man of God, always ready to listen to the needs and burdens of others, a strong pillar of faith preaching the Gospel of Christ without fear or favor of man with humility and love for all. Bro. Cates love for people was clearly demonstrated by his many visits to hospitals, nursing homes, and shut-ins.
Some of his favorite pastimes were going to the mountains, going to revivals, playing with his grandchildren, and spending time with his family.
Bro. Cates departed this life on December 5, 2014 in Jackson, Tennessee at the age of 68 Years, 10 Months, 20 Days. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia Ann (Pat) Cates of Enville, TN; three daughters, Angela Mayo and husband David, Deborah Carter and husband John, Kim Grant and husband Myles; four sons, James Brian Cates, Benny Cates and wife Wendi, Wade Cates and wife Rosario, Daniel Cates and wife Natalie; fourteen grandchildren, Lauren Jones and husband Michael, Joshua Carter, David Mayo Jr., Caleb Carter, Ethan Mayo, Malachi Matterson, Taylor Cates, Juan Cates, Briley Mayo, Alea Cates, Bradley Grant, Avis Grant, Esperanza Cates, Baylee Cates; a great-grandchild, Addison Jones; a brother, Robert (Butch) Cates and wife Cheryl; four sisters, Marie LaCroix and husband Clarence, Martha (Snookie) LaCroix and husband Fred, Jean Pickett and husband Max, Viola (Nell) Ray and husband Russell; an honorary daughter and son-in-law, Asleigh Doss and David; and a host of extended family and friends.
