Mr. Johnson, age 90, of Manchester, died Tuesday night, October 18, 2011, at Manchester Health Care Center.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, July 29, 1921 to the late James E. and Bertha Boatman Johnson, he attended Hornsby Elementary School and graduated from Middleton High School in 1940. He attended U. T. Martin, graduated from U. T. Knoxville with a BS in Agriculture Education, and earned his M. A. in Administration from Memphis State University. He spent 27 months in the Naval Air Force serving in the South Pacific in World War II. He married Frances Ann Cornelius, June 4, 1945, taught agriculture at Middleton High School for 10 years and served as principal for one year. He lived most of his life in Hardeman County, moving to Manchester, TN upon retirement in 1988.
He was a former member of the Tennessee Teacher's and the National Teacher's Associations, and the Tennessee and National Associations of State and County Employees. For 24 years, he was the executive director of Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service in Hardeman County and also a member of the Soil Conservation District Board. For 19 years he was the director and vice-president of the Tippah Electric Power Association, 4 years as the chairman of the March of Dimes, a member of the Development Committee for Human Services, and was scout master for the Middleton Boy Scouts. A former member of the Freed-Hardeman University Development Council, he served as an elder at the Middleton Church of Christ for 24 years and was most recently a member of the New Union Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Anne Johnson Fulks and husband Paul of Manchester, TN; a son, Dr. Joseph E. Johnson of Bowling Green, KY; six grandchildren, Marine Lance Corporal James Johnson of San Diego, CA, Hannah Johnson Hendon of Murray, KY, Heather Ruth Johnson of Bowling Green, KY, Amy F. Ogles and husband Jason of Murfreesboro, TN, Cecilia F. Jones and husband Ben of Soddy Daisy, TN, and Elizabeth Fulks of Manchester, TN; 2 great grandchildren, Asher Paul and Madison Elizabeth Jones; a sister Rachel Johnson Hodge of Rossville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.
