James ‘Jim’ Maxwell
Henderson: James Hadley Maxwell, age 78, died Monday morning at his home near Enville.
Mr. Maxwell was born November 6, 1937 in Corinth, MS, the son of the late Robert Hadley and Geneva Belle Davidson Maxwell. He graduated from high school in Harriman, TN in 1955, Freed-Hardeman College in 1957 and Colorado State University in 1961. He entered the United States Air Force and served at Lowry AFB in Colorado, Loring AFB in Maine, and Walker AFB in Roswell, New Mexico. He married Estelle Parrish, August 4, 1962. He received a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from New Mexico State University in 1969.
He was a guidance counselor and teacher for the Roswell Independent School System from 1965 to 1976. They moved to Henderson and he was guidance counselor at Chester County High School for five years. He was employed at Freed-Hardeman University from 1981 until his retirement in 2011 where he served as Director of Testing. He sponsored Phi Kappa Alpha for 25 years and also served as a freshman advisor.
He had served as a deacon at South Main Church of Christ in Roswell, New Mexico and also at the Estes Church of Christ near Henderson. He was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ.
Some of his hobbies were bee keeping, working in stain glass, installing carpet, and working on the family farm. He had also driven a semi for Copen Industries.
He loved helping people, spending time with his family, particularly playing basketball with his grandson.
He is survived by his wife Estelle Parrish Maxwell of Enville, two daughters; Melissa Maxwell of Enville and Cari Maxwell Rowe and husband Marty of Tupelo, MS, a grandson Chase Hadley Rowe of Tupelo and a sister Carolyn Wright of Kerrville, TX.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday at the Henderson Church of Christ with David Shannon, Roy Sharp, and Charlie Smith officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at the Old Estes Cemetery south of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.
