James Owens Morris, affectionately known to many as "Jimmy," passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, in Waverly, Tennessee. Born on August 17, 1942, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, Jimmy lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and love for his family and community.
Jimmy spent much of his life in Waverly, having called it home since 1967, after residing for a time in Memphis, Tennessee. His commitment to his work was evident to all who knew him; he was a heavy equipment operator, skilled in managing powerful machinery. Over his career, he lent his expertise to Tillett Brothers in Shelbyville, Andeen/Gregory in Nashville, and Vaughan Construction Company. In addition to operating heavy equipment, Jimmy was also a truck driver, a testament to his versatility and work ethic. Friends and family often heard him say that he could drive anything yellow, a fond reference to Caterpillar equipment, which he handled with admirable precision and care.
Beyond his professional life, Jimmy had a passion for the simpler joys. He found great pleasure in yard work, tending to his surroundings with the same attention he gave his job. His affection extended deeply to his wife Laura A. Morris, with whom he cherished the simple, tender moments, particularly loving to hold Laura’s hand. The laughter and presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled his life with happiness and purpose.
Jimmy was a devoted member of the First Pentecostal Church in Waverly, where faith and community were cornerstones of his daily life. His spiritual home was a source of strength and fellowship throughout his years.
He was preceded in death by his father, James David Morris, mother, Jewell Kathleen Owens, first wife, Carol Ann Morris, and brother, William Lynn Morris. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Laura A. Morris; son James Harold Morris and Christy; brother Jerry D. Morris; sister Katie Murphy; grandchildren Jamie Flowers (Colt) and Nikki King (Jeremy); and beloved great-grandchildren Hayden, Kenzi, Jensen, Haddie, Lelanda, and Mac.
Family, friends, and community members will gather to celebrate Jimmy’s life and pay their respects during a visitation on April 5, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar, Tennessee. His funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. the same day at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Wyatt Cemetery in Hornsby, Tennessee.
James Owens Morris lived a life defined by diligence, love, and steadfastness. His legacy is one of a man who worked hard, cared deeply for his family, and held fast to his faith. He leaves behind a community enriched by his presence and memories that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
