James Milton Raines, age 92 of Knoxville, TN formerly of Grand Junction, TN passed away peacefully Monday morning, September 27 at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville.
Mr. Raines was born in Memphis, TN on December 3, 1917 and moved to Grand Junction in 1932 where he graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1936. He lived in Grand Junction until moving to Knoxville 7 years ago. Mr. Raines was a member of First Methodist Church, Grand Junction, TN where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. After moving to Knoxville, he attended Bearden United Methodist Church. Mr. Raines was a retired Rural Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service and had previously been a teacher in Shelby County Schools and teacher and principal in Hardeman County Schools. Mr. Raines attended the University of Tennessee Martin Junior College where he played football and basketball. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1941 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Mr. Raines was a World War II veteran where he served in the European Theater and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
Mr. Raines is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Josephine Mahaffey Raines, his parents, Clyde Marion Raines, Sr. and Mayme King Raines, a stepmother Annie Lou Stroupe Raines, three brothers Clyde Marion Raines, Jr., Henry King Raines, and Lewis Drulard Raines and a sister Sara Elizabeth Brady. He is survived by his son, James Lee Raines and wife, Tricia of Knoxville, grandson, Thomas Elliott Raines of Knoxville, and three nieces, Gwendolyn Coats, of Decatur, AL, Betty Fullerton, of Fayetteville, TN, and Judy Phillips of Lawrenceburg, TN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Junction Methodist Church or the Grand Junction Cemetery Association.
